The Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) sponsors an annual event called Field Day. The main purpose of this event is to hone the individual and collective operating skills of federally licensed amateur radio operators. By using ONLY emergency power like batteries or generators, and setting up in remote locations far away from the comfort of our homes, we increase our ability to operate under adverse conditions. This helps to assure that the next time the power goes off we will be ready to assist with emergency communications.
The Rowan Amateur Radio Society has participated in these Field Day activities for over 40 yrs. We usually begin setting up at about noon on Saturday and operate for 24 consecutive hours, shutting down at noon on Sunday. We will have a SPECIAL 'GOTA' (Get On The Air) station available during this years event which allows ANYONE the opportunity to talk on the radio and experience the excitement of making that first contact. Rumor has it that more then one lifelong friendship started in this manner, so why not stop by and give it a try? We'll see you there at Sloan Park June 28-29 2008. Bring the whole family, have a picnic and make a day of it.
The public is always welcome and encouraged to attend this Free event!
