Repeater Rules of Operation

Once there are a set of rules and protocols established by the Rowan Amateur Radio Society’s Repeater Committee, we will post them here. In the meantime you may consider…checking your radio settings to confirm you are on the right frequency, have the right tone programmed in, your offset is correct, your volume control is at a comfortable level, your grounded and connected to the proper antenna…then:

  1. Listen FIRST! Unless you have emergency traffic, you should just listen for at least one minute before you begin transmitting to verify the repeater is not already in use.
  2. To initiate contact simply give your call sign out like “N4UH” or you may prefer to say something like “This is W4EXU monitoring” or “N4UH standing by”. If you are hoping to contact a specific person you would simply say “N4UH N4UH this is W4EXU” un-key and then you listen.
  3. Remember to leave a pause between each participants transmissions to see if there is anybody wanting to join in on your QSO (conversation), or maybe has priority or emergency traffic.
  4. ALWAYS yield to “Emergency” and “Priority” traffic!
  5. Be courteous.
