The 146.730 MHz FM Amateur Radio Repeater on Young Mountain is once again operational. Plagued with problems in recent years, which included having the old tower and antenna knocked down by a construction crew. The repeater now has a brand new tower, antenna, and feed line. The repeater now ID’s with the call sign “KU4PT” which belongs to Ralph Mowery, one of the local Amateur Radio Operators that helps maintain the equipment. This repeater which is located in north-western Rowan County North Carolina has been on the air since the 1970′s and is known locally as the “73 machine”. The input frequency is 146.130 MHz with a PL Tone of 94.8 Hz. Output power is 100 watts and it is operational 24/7.
This year Field Day will take place on June 25th and 26th 2011, and there will be two Field Day events held in Rowan County NC.
The first event, hosted by the Rowan County Amateur Radio Emergency Services will be held at the American Red Cross building on Jake Alexander Blvd. You can find more information on their website: Rowan ARES Event Page
The second event, hosted by the Rowan Amateur Radio Society will be held at Sloan Park which is located about 10 miles west of Salisbury just off NC Hwy 150. For more information on this event please see our Field Day page: Rowan ARS Field Day Page
Field Day presents an excellent opportunity to demonstrate Amateur Radio to the general public, elected officials, and organizations that Amateur Radio might serve during an actual emergency. We use alternate sources of power like generators, solar panels, and batteries to simulate the conditions often found during these disasters. With a participation of over 35,000 Amateur Radio Operators across the US and Canada each year, many locations now include a GOTA (Get On The Air) station which allows unlicensed individuals, with the guidance of a licensed operator, the chance to talk on the radio to other hams near and far…why not come out and give it a try!
At the June meeting of the Rowan Amateur Radio Society on Monday, 6-13-2011, W4VEC will offer an exam test session. Please notify anyone you know who wants to take an Amateur License Exam to be a the Rufty-Holmes Senior Center at 7 PM. We will test for all classes including Technician, General, and Extra. This is a reminder that the General Class Exam changes on July 1 and this will be the last chance to take a test based on the old question pool. The next scheduled exam session will be at the Firecracker Hamfest on July 9th. (Directions and Meeting Info)
